The Malt Scoop Inn is a traditional inn dating back to the s. It can be found in the village of Merton in Devon and has long been serving quality food and drink to locals and visitors to the area. The pub has a friendly atmosphere and regularly hosts events including an open mic night, comedy evenings and a pub quiz. Diners have the choice of eating in The Malt Scoop dining room, in a cosy nook by a roaring fire or, in summer, heading out to eat al fresco in the beer garden.
The food at The Malt Scoop Inn Merton is made with locally sourced ingredients and offers both classic British and international flavours. Diners can expect to find dishes like home cooked honey roast ham served with egg and chips, a homemade beef madras curry served with rice and naan bread, River Exe mussels in a creamy white wine and garlic sauce or a simple salmon steak served with new potatoes and salad.
There are lighter bites for lunch, a range of tasty desserts and a specials board which changes regularly. The Malt Scoop Inn is located on the A in Merton’s small village centre and there’s a large car park opposite. Visitors will find Great Torrington just 10 minutes’ drive away and Okehampton around 20 minutes’ drive away.
There’s plenty to do in the local area. Merton is well-placed for those heading out on country walks in the Devon countryside and it’s just a mile to the Tarka Trail, a popular cycling route.

The fabulously cosy sitting room is just divine; with plush sofas to recline on, a roaring wood burning stove in a huge inglenook fireplace and beamed ceilings, it’s a real step back in time but with super-modern touches such as the underfloor heating and large TV to catch up on all those films you’ve been meaning to watch. The cute cottage kitchen with eggshell-blue cabinets and white walls comes complete with everything the modern chef needs to rustle up a romantic feast or two for their loved one, including the all-important Nespresso coffee machine for a wake-me-up brew in the morning.
Windows look out over the garden and you can watch birds – such as spotted woodpeckers – feeding, whilst the round dining table at the far end of the kitchen is made for intimate meals – just idyllic! Tucked away on the first floor and accessed via a special staircase in the living room, the romantic, country-fresh bedroom has a lovely king size bed with Feather and Black mattress, gorgeous White Company linen and striking yellow throws and cushions to ensure an epic nights’ sleep before gently waking to the sound of church bells – how romantic!
The stunning original wood floor has been darkened by years of polishing, whilst we love the antique chest of drawers and stack of vintage suitcases. The en suite bathroom, with ‘Jack and Jill’ doors meaning another door also leads into the main hallway has a large walk-in rainfall shower and separate bath for long leisurely soaks, plus a heated towel rail.
The ancient market town of Okehampton sits on the northern edge of Dartmoor in the centre of Devon. A popular gateway into the National Park, the town has Saxon roots dating back to the 7th century. Parklands Leisure Centre is open throughout the year, with a swimming pool the whole family can enjoy, and a rainy afternoon can be spent enjoying a movie at the New Carlton Cinema screening all the latest films and offering a licensed auditorium.
The town contains a host of uniquely individual shops and antique emporiums around its pretty Victorian Arcade and Red Lion Yard. The wide choice of places to eat and drink cater for all tastes and include everything from charming 16th century inns serving fine locally sourced food and ales to stylish cafes, ice cream parlours, quaint Victorian style tearooms and world cuisine restaurants. The Norman conquerors were the first to establish a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep here, however it was the Earl of Devon Hugh Courtenay who transformed the Norman structure into a lavish residence in the 14th century.
The long-standing Museum of Dartmoor Life located in the centre of Okehampton on West Street offers one of the best introductions to the National Park. The museum is spread across three floors and features exhibits exploring the geology of the landscapes, ancient pre-historic settlement and traditional industries in Dartmoor. Social history and people in the the past who have worked in local industries such as quarrying, glassmaking, rural crafts, mining and hill farming are a focus in exhibits.
